Healthy Eating

At Morden Primary School, we actively promote healthy eating habits to support our pupils' physical and mental wellbeing. Below is important guidance on packed lunches, snacks, school milk, drinking water, and school dinners.

? Healthy Packed Lunches

We ask that all children who bring a packed lunch do so in a clearly named lunchbox or bag. Packed lunches should provide a balanced, nutritious meal to support your child throughout the school day.

❌ Please note:

  • No sweets, full-sized chocolate bars or fizzy drinks are permitted.
  • We are a nut-free school – this includes products containing peanuts, peanut butter, Nutella, and certain cereal bars.
  • No chocolate bars or crisps on Mondays – a healthy-eating initiative introduced by our School Council.

✅ Healthy Lunchbox Checklist:

  • Starchy base: wholemeal bread, wraps, pasta or rice salad.
  • Fruit and vegetables: e.g. apple, satsuma, carrot sticks, cherry tomatoes.
  • Dairy or alternative: yogurt, cheese portion.
  • Protein: lean meat (ham, chicken, tuna), egg, hummus, or legumes.
  • Drink: water only.

? Healthy Morning Snack

To help maintain energy and concentration levels, children are encouraged to bring a healthy snack for morning break.

Nursery to Year 2 pupils receive a free daily snack through the Government's fruit and vegetable scheme.

Years 3 to 6 should bring a named snack, kept separate from their lunch and placed in the classroom snack tray on arrival.

Recommended: fresh fruit or vegetables, dried fruits such as apricots or raisins (in moderation). Not permitted: processed fruit snacks, fruit winders, or other high-sugar alternatives.

? Drinking Water

All pupils must bring a named water bottle to school each day. Regular hydration is strongly encouraged, and children may refill their bottles throughout the day.

? Milk Provision – Cool Milk Scheme

All children under the age of five are entitled to free school milk. Once your child turns five, you can choose to continue receiving milk through the Cool Milk Scheme by registering at www.coolmilk.com.

?️ School Dinners

From September 2023, all primary school pupils in London are entitled to a free school meal each day. If your child currently has a packed lunch and you wish to switch to school meals, please notify Mrs Freeman in the school office. Meals are ordered in advance – switching mid-week is not permitted. If your child has allergies or dietary requirements, please speak with the school office before enrolling them for school meals.
